STCW 95 Basic Training

The STCW 95 course and modules form part of the statutory requirements for both deck and engineering qualification. It is a globally recognised qualification for working afloat on boats over 24m. The STCW 95 can be taken as one STCW 95 course over 5 days or as individual modules. There are four STCW 95 modules that are considered a basic entry level to working at sea, Basic Safety Training (BST)

What is STCW 95?

STCW 95 stands for Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping. Created by the International Maritime Organisation in 1978 and amended in 1995, the STCW 95 code came into international effect in February 2003. The STCW 95 code was introduced to set minimum international training standards for professional mariners.

Why do I have to complete STCW 95 Basic Training?

If you want to work on boats over 24m you are legally required to completed STCW 95 Basic Training so you are aware of safety procedures that will keep yourself, your crew members and passengers safe.

What will STCW 95 Basic Training enable me to do?

Although it is a safety requirement to hold a STCW 95 certificate to work on boats over 24m, it is not a qualification that alone will get you a job in the maritime industry. This is because it doesn’t give you the skills, knowledge or seamanship needed to work at sea.

Should I have a STCW 95 certificate although I already hold yachting qualifications?

Having a STCW 95 certificate alongside your current qualifications will show to potential employers that you are not only a highly qualified candidate but also someone who is serious about a career in the industry. If you have no previous sailing experience or qualifications, we will provide you with plenty of information about starting a career in yachting.

What does STCW 95 Basic Training contain?

STCW 95 Basic Training consists of four modules; personal survival techniques, fire fighting and fire prevention, elementary first aid and personal safety and social responsibility. The training will take 5 days to complete. You can book onto the full course or individual modules, however please be aware that you will need to complete all four modules to get your STCW 95 Basic Training certificate.

How will a STCW 95 certificate help my career progression?

This depends on what direction you want to take your yachting career. With a STCW 95 certificate you will have the options to work on superyachts, private yacht charter, flotilla and deliveries all over 24m.

If you have Commercial Yachtmaster qualifications and would like to direct your career towards working on boats over 24m, you will need to complete STCW 95 Basic Training as a bolt-on module.
